BOOK NEWS: August 30, 2022

It’s the final release week of August. Here are some of the new books releasing this week.

 

Books for Older Kids/Teens/Young Adults


The Midnight Children – The latest from Dan Gemeinhart (The Honest Truth – ♥♥♥♥♥, Scar Island – ♥♥♥♥, Good Dog – ♥♥♥♥). When Ravani witnesses a group of kids arrive in town and move into an abandoned home across the street, he has tons of questions including “Where are their adults?” I’ll be reviewing this soon.
A Taste of Magic – Before Kyana can really enjoy the news that she is a witch who gets to learn to use magic, her magical school loses funding and is in danger of closing. Kyana is certain she can save it if she can win a big baking competition, but soon the pressure of regular school, magic school, the competition, and keeping her secrets becomes too much. This sounds awesome!
The Final Gambit – The third and final book in the Inheritance Games series by my all time favorite, Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Weeks before Avery is scheduled to inherit billions, an unexpected visitor arrives setting Avery and the Hawthorne brothers on a dangerous path. I have had this pre-ordered for most of this year – my wait is almost over!
The Liar’s Crown – A secret, hidden twin gets kidnapped when she steps in – as she is supposed to – for her sister, the queen. EEK! This sounds so amazing! I’ve already pre-ordered this one.
Nothing More to Tell – The latest from the author of One of Us Is Lying (♥♥♥♥), Karen McManus. Brynn left St Ambrose four years ago after the death of her favorite teacher, but now that she has an internship with a true crime show, she’s going back to find out the truth of what happened. I have this one on hold at the library!

 

Books for Adults


Holiday Heroine (Trade Paperback) – Book 6 in the Heroine Complex series (Heroine Complex – ♥♥♥♥). During a fight with other-worldly forces, Bea is transported to a romcom-version of her holiday and she’ll have to figure out what happened – and fight the temptation to go to the dark side – so she can get back to her real life. I’d love to get caught up on this series – it’s quirky and sassy and fun!
Two Parks Sugar, One Part Murder (Trade Paperback) – When Maddy’s fiancé leaves her at the altar, an inheritance and the chance to start over is too tempting to refuse. But when Maddy is accused of murder in her new town, she’s going to have to figure out who really did it to save her future. I’ll be reviewing this one soon!
The Commonsense Guide to Your Classroom Library (September 1) – Colby Sharp and Donalyn Miller team up to help teachers build a classroom library. I can’t wait to read this one!

My Pet Feet – When the letter R goes missing, a town gets turned upside down. This looks hilarious! I can’t wait to read it.

Books for Older Kids/Teens/Young Adults


Enola Holmes: Mycroft’s Dangerous Game (Graphic Novel) – First in a new graphic novel series based on the Netflix series (which is based on a book series) starring Enola Holmes. This is an original story which is said to “bridge” the gap from the first movie to the next. When Mycroft goes missing, Enola teams up with Lord Tewkesbury to find him.
Homebound – A sequel to Stowaway by John David Anderson. Separated from his brother, Leo considers how he can fulfill his father’s mission as he travels with space pirates.
Four for the Road – A teen in a grief group invites some of the other group members to join him on a road trip where he’s secretly hoping to get revenge on the drunk driver who killed his mother and got off on a technicality. I’ve asked my local library to pick this one up.

 

Books for Adults


Heartbreaker (Mass Market Paperback) – Book 2 in the Hell’s Belles series. A wallflower who is secretly a Matchbreaker and a Duke with secrets to hide team up to break up a wedding. I’ve already got this one on hold at the library.
Kit McBride Gets a Wife (Trade Paperback) – A young woman puts out an ad for mail-order brides for her older brothers. As an employee for an eccentric widow, Maddy is along for the ride when her employer decides to answer the ad, but when her employer disappears, Maddy is left to assume the woman’s name and circumstances. This could be fun!
Love on the Brain (Trade Paperback) – A scientist is forced to work with her nemesis which is only the first problem to befall her in the lab. This looks cute!
Not Your Basic Love Story (e-book) – Opposites attract when a couple hit it off on vacation, but when they return to their real lives, they aren’t sure how to make the differences work.
Six Feet Deep Dish (Mass Market Paperback) – First in a new Deep Dish mystery series. On the verge of the life she dreamed of, Delilah loses her fiancé (and his trust fund) and then her grandmother is accused of murder. I’ll be reviewing this one soon.

Books for Older Kids/Teens/Young Adults


What Do We Know About Bigfoot? – The folks who launched the Who Was series kick off a new branch of their hugely popular nonfiction line – the What Do We Know About line. Early titles include this one about Bigfoot as well as crop circles (also releasing this week), Atlantis and the Loch Ness Monster (November 2022), and Roswell (March 2023).
Ashfall Prophecy – From the author of I Am Number Four. Syd barely remembers his alien father, but as a child of both a human and a Denzan, he has been prophesied to be a “world killer.” But when Syd discovers the secrets his father died to protect, he is determined to create his own destiny in the universe-impacting events to come. This sounds fantastic. I already have this one on hold at the library.
The Year Without a Summer – When a volcanic eruption leads to snow in June, one teen thinks it’s amazing and wonders what it would have been like to live through the “year without a summer” in 1815 when something similar occurred. Another teen sees it, and other evidence of climate change, as a crisis for the planet leading to frequent clashes between the two.

 

Books for Adults


Love in the Time of Serial Killers (Trade Paperback) – A PhD candidate obsessed with serial killers is trying to finish her dissertation while dealing with the fallout of the death of her father. But she starts to wonder what her new neighbor his up to. Is he a serial killer like the others she’s read about, or is he just a genuinely nice guy – and which of those options scares her more? This one is on my library wish list.

The Daredevils – A stand-alone book from the author of the Mr. Terupt series and the Perfect Score series. During the last summer before middle school, twins Loretta and Waylon and a new friend make a discovery in the woods near their houses.

 

Books for Adults


A Killing in Costumes (Hardcover) – First in a new Hollywood Treasures Mystery series. Former soap opera stars who once were married to keep their sexual orientations a secret are now friends and business partners when they open a movie memorabilia shop. In an effort to keep their shop afloat, they go head to head with the owner of an auction house over an immense collection. But when he’s later murdered, Jay and Cindy are the prime suspects.

The Baby-Changing Station – A magical changing station gives an older brother the chance to trade in the new baby for something cool.
Star Trek: The Girl Who Made The Stars – A pictures book licensed by Star Trek Discovery starring a girl based on the character of Michael Burnham.

Books for Older Kids/Teens/Young Adults


Invisible (Graphic Novel) – Five Spanish-speaking kids, lumped together to complete their school’s community service, have to decide if it’s more important to help someone in need or to stay invisible. I’ve heard rave reviews of this one!
Hello, Goodbye – It feels like Hailey’s summer is ruined when her parents tell her she has to spend it helping the grandmother she hardly knows. But when tragedy strikes, Hailey  will take what she learned from Gigi and head out on a road trip to solve a family mystery. I’ve requested this one from the library!
How to Date a Superhero (And Not Die Trying) – When Astrid discovers her boyfriend is a superhero, it upends her life in ways she couldn’t have imagined. I’ll be reviewing this one soon.
The King Will Kill You – Book 3 in the Kingdom of Sand and Sky series about a princess in love with a stable boy. I have this series on my wish list!

Books for Adults


Bookish People (Trade Paperback) – A scandal-ridden poet is counting on the one bookstore still willing to host his signing as a way to salvage his career. The shop owner had asked her events coordinator to cancel the signing too, but the coordinator believes the poet could be her biological father, and she’d like to see how things play out when he comes to town. This sounds fantastic!
The Hookup Plan
 (Trade Paperback) – Book 3 in the Boyfriend Project series. Dr. London Kelly hooks up with her high school nemesis – just a one time thing – after their reunion with no idea he will be working with her hospital over the next several weeks. I’ll be reviewing this one soon.
The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie (Trade Paperback) – A young woman who gave up her dreams to care for her family has the chance to re-live three moments from the road not taken. This is on my library wishlist.
Round Up the Usual Peacocks (Hardcover) – Book 31 in the delightful Meg Langslow series. Kevin, Meg’s nephew, asks her to look into some cold cases when some friends who have a podcast seem to be the target for a murderer connected to one of the cases they have been discussing. I never miss a new Meg Langslow book – I am number 35 on the hold list at the library!
Star Trek: The Genesis Trilogy (Hardcover) – An in-depth look at these well-loved Star Trek movies.

Books for Kids


Black Adam: An Origin Story/Harley Quinn: An Origin Story – Two of four new DC Supervillain origin stories from Stone Arch Books. I have a Batgirl book from the hero line which I loved. I think the Black Adam book would be a great pick up for this year as the movie releases in October. (Also Poison Ivy and Cheetah)

Books for Teens/Young Adults


Accomplished: A Georgie Darcy Novel – After what happened last year, Georgie is determined to become the “perfect Darcy.” I am not a P&P fan, but I am intrigued by this reimagined contemporary novel. I’ll be reviewing this one soon.
Master of Iron – Book 2 in the Bladesmith series, after Blade of Secrets, by Tricia Levenseller. In Ziva’s quest to save her sister she finds the exact trouble she had been hoping to avoid. I am behind on this series as book 1 is still on my TBR. I need to kick it into gear!
Star Wars: Padawan – A story of young Obi-Wan. When his master goes missing, Obi-Wan leaves on a mission without him, falling into a gang of Force-wielding teens. This is definitely on my list for this week! I’m curious to see if it ties into some of the Obi-Wan backstory from other SW novels I have read.
Violet Made of Thorns – A crafty diviner is in danger of losing her royal role when the king asks her to prophesy about the prince’s future. Doing so may curse the kingdom, depending on the bride the prince chooses. I am really eager to give this one a try.
Zantanna: The Jewel of Gravesend (Graphic Novel) – A mystic’s quest for a powerful jewel unravels everything Zatanna thought was true about her life.

 

Books for Adults


Booked on a Feeling (Trade Paperback) – A new book by Jayci Lee. A high-powered attorney back in her favorite childhood vacation spot to recover from the stress of her job starts renovating an old bookstore with her childhood friend. She has no idea of his mad crush for her, and he has no plans to tell her since she is leaving in a few weeks. Sounds delightful! I’ll be reviewing this soon.
No Parm No Foul (Mass Market Paperback) – Book 2 in the Grilled Cheese Mystery series. When a rival sandwich shop owner is killed after a confrontation in her shop, Carly needs to find a killer before she takes the rap. This series sounds so cozy, I have to check it out!
The Nova Incident (Trade Paperback) – Book 3(ish) in the Galactic Cold War series. Simon and his team are called back in when a bomb explodes in Salaam and an ex-spy is implicated. I have really enjoyed this series! It starts with a prequel, The Caledonian Gambit (♥♥♥♥), and then moves into the series proper with The Bayern Agenda (♥♥♥♥)  and The Aleph Extraction (♥♥♥♥). There are also several short stories in the series worth a read. I’ll be reviewing this new book soon.
Three Miles Down: A Novel of First Contact in the Tumultuous 1970s (Hardcover) – In 1974 a marine biology student is recruited to help with a top-secret government project to raise a downed Russian sub. What they don’t tell him at first is what took the sub out – an alien vessel resting on the ocean floor next to the sub. I am intrigued by this one and have it on my library wish list!

Books for Adults


The Accidental Pinup (Trade Paperback) – A plus-sized photographer finds herself in front of the camera modeling a line of lingerie while her rival is behind the camera. This looks terrific! This one is already on my library list!
The Bodyguard (Hardcover) – A high priced bodyguard protecting an actor from a stalker poses as his girlfriend so his family doesn’t know he’s in danger. I have this on hold at the library – when I finally get it, I will be dropping everything else to start reading!
The Daughter of Doctor Moreau (Hardcover) – A newcomer to the island sets off a dangerous chain reaction between the island’s human inhabitants and the monstrosities Dr. Moreau has created. This is not my usual sort of read, and I haven’t read the original book. But I am intrigued by this premise!
The Godparent Trap (Trade Paperback) – A free-spirited food blogger and a rigid accountant become co-guardians when his sister/her best friend and her husband are killed. But as much as the two godparents hate each other, they might need each other more. This is also on my library list.

When Cat hosts a group of paranormal authors at her retreat center, it puts the sponsorship of the local college in jeopardy. But when the primary adversary at the college winds up dead, Cat starts hunting for a killer – again.
Eclipse the Moon (Trade Paperback) – Book 2 in the Starlight’s Shadow series. I’ll be reviewing this soon!
Hottie on Her Shelf (ebook) – A head librarian finds herself running for mayor thanks to one passing comment. This looks cute!
Into the Mist (Hardcover) – An attack on the US includes the release of a green mist that kills men and gives women unusual powers. A group of teachers coming home from a conference encounter the mist and try to find a safe space to ride out the apocalypse. YES! Top of my list for this week! I already have this one on pre-order.
Nobody’s Princess (Mass Market Paperback) – Graham’s intelligence leads him to believe there’s a member or royalty in need of his help but instead it is a woman who intends to be the first Royal Guardswoman in her country – and she wants no help from a man, no matter how charming he is.
Nothing But the Truth (Trade Paperback) – A wish over a pre-birthday cocktail after being stood up by her boyfriend leaves Lucy unable to lie – lie to herself about the things she does out of obligation rather than desire, and unable to lie at work about how awful things are. And once the truth is out there, Lucy is left to fight all of the injustices around her. I have this one on hold from the library.
The Story of You Workbook (Nonfiction) – A workbook to accompany the 2021 release The Story of You. I’ll be reviewing this workbook soon.

The Charmed List – When Ellie’s prank against her former best friend, Jack, backfires and puts her relationship with her new best friend in jeopardy, she’s stuck with Jack on a road trip as her punishment. I’ll be reviewing this one soon.
Lia and Beckett’s Abracadabra – From the author of The Quantum Weirdness of the Almost-Kiss. While Lia is all in on a magic competition against the Blackwell boys, she doesn’t realize the cute guy she met on the beach is one of them. I’ll be reviewing this one soon as well!

Acts of Violet (Hardcover) – Violet, a magician, disappeared in the middle of her act. Ten years later, her sister Sasha is looking for answers, as is Violet’s niece and a podcaster who won’t leave Sasha be. This sounds intriguing! This one is already on my library wish list.
A Cold Nose for Murder (Mass Market Paperback) – Book 3 in the always delightful Chatty Corgi series. I’ll be reviewing this soon!
Dream On (Trade Paperback) – A woman wakes up after an accident with memories of a boyfriend who everyone in her life says doesn’t exist. A year later, she meets him. Yes, please! This is also on my library list.
The Finalists (Trade Paperback) – Six college students locked in a Victorian mansion compete for a fellowship – but not everyone will survive. My library is so amazing, they already have this one coming soon. It’s on my list.
For You & No One Else (Trade Paperback) – To recover after becoming a “worst date ever” meme, Eliza agrees to go off social media for 6 months and learn to live in the “real world.” Fascinating!
Holy Chow (Hardcover) – Book 25 in the excellent Andy Carpenter series. I’ll be reviewing this one soon!
A Perilous Pal (Mass Market Paperback) – Book 2 in the Friend for Hire Mystery series. I’ll be reviewing this one soon, too.

Pets Rule!: My Kingdom of Darkness – First in a new series from BRANCHES. Ember the rescue Chihuahua thinks he is an evil overlord and tries to get the other family pets to help him take over the neighborhood.

 

Books for Adults


The Accidental Newlywed Game (Mass Market Paperback) – Book 3 in the Boots and Bouquets series. A wedding planner at a convention in Vegas runs into her sister’s ex-fiancé – and after a drunken night she wakes up to find them married. This sounds fun and breezy – perfect for summer!
A Bride’s Guide to Marriage and Murder (Hardcover) – Frances and George have just gotten married when her brother is accused of murder. I’ll be reviewing this one soon.
The Dead Romantics (Trade Paperback) – Something new from Ashley Poston. A ghostwriter afraid she’s going to lose her job when she gets a new editor finds herself in the town where she never wanted to return after the death of her father. But one more surprise is waiting for her at the family funeral home – the ghost of her new editor. Yes, please!! I’ll be reviewing this one soon.
For the Love of the Bard (Trade Paperback) – A writer longing for time to work on her latest YA novel instead gets roped into helping direct a local production of Twelfth Night while she’s also trying to dodge the local veterinarian who broke her heart as a teen.
His Amish Sweetheart (Mass Market Paperback) – Book 3 in the Petersheim Brothers series, originally titled Austin. Alfie and Benji just have to help their brother Austin find a girl so he will finally move out and they can move from the cellar back into the house, away from the spiders. I adore this series. I’ll be reviewing this one soon.
Star Wars: Shadow of the Sith (Hardcover) – 20 years after Endor, Luke and Lando team up to investigate a growing Sith threat that’s involved in the kidnapping of Lando’s daughter. I am intrigued!
Two-Damage My Heart (Trade Paperback) – Book 2 in the Nerds of Happy Valley series. Rue once fell in love with her brother’s roommate who would send her letters of encouragement from across the country. And then he ghosted her and disappeared. Eight years later, he returns – and he doesn’t recognize her.  But she remembers it all too clearly and wants no part of his apparent interest.
Radical Love (Hardcover) – A memoir from Zachary Levi, star of Chuck and Shazam.
