BOOK NEWS: July 30, 2024

Here are some of the new books out this week:

Books for Older Kids/Teens/Young Adults


Fowl Play – Chloe believes her favorite uncle might have been murdered, and she decides to do some investigating. This is described as Knives Out meets Finding Orion, and that was all I needed to know!
The Night Librarian (Graphic Novel) – Twins take on a secret mission to find their dad’s missing edition of Dracula and uncover a world where literary characters have broken free from their stories.
The Grandest Game – First in the new Grandest Game series by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, a companion series to the Inheritance Games series. Avery and the Hawthorne Brothers have created an annual game to win fame and fortune, and seven participants with secrets to hide show up hoping to win. I will absolutely be reading this!
Such Charming Liars – The latest thriller from Karen M. McManus. Mother-and-daughter grifters run into  unexpected guests at their last score before going straight. These are always top notch!

Books for Adults


Between Friends & Lovers (Trade Paperback) – An Instagram celebrity is struggling over the areas of her life that don’t live up to her image including her unrequited crush who shows up at an event with her childhood bully. So instead, she takes up with a writer who has found fast and unexpected fame. I’m really curious about this one!
The Bookshop Sisterhood (Trade Paperback) – Four women about to achieve their dream of opening a bookshop together each get news that puts their dream in jeopardy.
The Fiancé Dilemma (Trade Paperback) – Josie creates a fake engagement to help her with some bad PR. This sounds cute!
Name Your Price (Trade Paperback) – Two exes get drawn into a reality TV show where they have to spend a month locked together in a house. This sounds cute, too!
Cross Stitch in the Forest (Nonfiction) – A cross stitch collection from Max Pigeon/Pigeon Coop. I LOVE this designer, and I pre-ordered this ages ago. Can’t wait to see it in person!
Star Trek: Illustrated Oral History (Hardcover – nonfiction) – The story of Star Trek told by the cast of the Original Series.
Take Care of Your Friends: An Enneagram Guide to Interpersonal Relationships (Hardcover – nonfiction) – I’ll be reviewing this one soon.

The Ghostkeeper (LGBTQ+, Graphic Novel) – The story of a man who can see ghosts trying to help them move on when the key to the Doors of Death goes missing and the ghosts are trapped here with humans who want to destroy them.

Chaos at the Lazy Bones Bookshop (Trade Paperback) – First in a new Halloween Bookshop Mystery series by Emmaline Duncan. The new manager of Lazy Bones Books finds herself a murder suspect when someone dies at the start of the Lit Festival she’s hosting.
A Cup of Flour, a Pinch of Death (Trade Paperback) – Book 3 in the Baker Street Mystery series. Maddy is suspected of murder when her rival comes to town and their argument goes viral before the woman is killed.
Do Me a Favor (Trade Paperback) – A blocked cookbook ghostwriter finds inspiration in the handyman who is her new next door neighbor. There are some fun details of this second chance romance – such as a career as a cookbook ghostwriter – that make me want to pick this one up!
Jewel Me Twice (Trade Paperback) – Former lovers reunite for one last heist while trying to ignore the chemistry between them.
Ne’er Duke Well (Trade Paperback) – A new duke trying to become “respectable” hires someone to help him.  Over time, she starts to think that she could be the perfect wife for him… if it weren’t for the secret erotic library she runs.
The Ornithologist’s Field Guide to Love (Trade Paperback) – First in a new series by India Holton. Rival ornithologists are drawn into a competition to be named the Birder of the Year. If I didn’t already love Holton’s Dangerous Damsels series, I might not give this a try. But I AM a fan of that quirky series, so I will absolutely be checking this one out!
Star Trek: The Original Series: Lost to Eternity (Trade Paperback) – A follow-up story to Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (The One with the Whales). Yes, please!
A Very Woodsy Murder (Hardcover) – First in the new Golden Motel Mystery series. A sitcom writer and her first ex-husband decide to renovate a remote motel. Among the many things they aren’t prepared for is a murder.

The Quacken – Hector breaks the campground’s rule about feeding the ducks and releases the Quacken. The sample pictures of this crack me up!
Scare School Diaries: Welcome to Scare School – First in a new chapter book series by Jarrett Lerner. A young ghost feels nervous about heading to Scare School for the first time.

Gamerville (Graphic Novel) – A gamer is sent to Camp Reset for the summer where electronics aren’t allowed.
Wicked Marigold – Princess Marigold is 11 when her perfect and beloved older sister escapes her captivity and returns home, leaving Marigold wondering if that means she is supposed to become a wicked princess. Yes, please!
Dashed – Margaret Dashwood is looking forward to a vacation with her sensible older sister Elinor before she heads to college, but instead, their trip is crashed by Marianne, lamenting yet another broken heart. YES! I am here for this contemporary take on Sense and Sensibility.

Books for Adults


Au Pair Affair (Trade Paperback) – Book 2 in the Big Shots series. A divorced hockey player hires an au pair for his tween who just wants to see her parents get back together, despite the obvious chemistry between the hockey player and the au pair.
The Bang-Bang Sisters (Hardcover) – Full time rock stars and part-time vigilantes find themselves in a mobster’s crosshairs where he pits them against one another where only one can survive. Yikes!
The Body in the Backyard (Trade Paperback) – Book 4 in my new FAVORITE series! Riley’s ex comes to Santiago Investigations when he thinks someone is trying to kill him.
The Ex Vows (Trade Paperback) – Two exes team up to help their mutual friend salvage his wedding when the venue is destroyed in a fire.
It Had to Be You (Hardcover) – Two strangers hook up on a train, never expecting to see each other again. But they run into each other again when they discover they are both contract killers – and she’s been hired to kill him.
The Lost Story (Hardcover) – Two boys who went missing for 6 months are now adults and must return to the place where they disappeared to in order to find another missing person.
What Happens in Idaho (Trade Paperback) – A grieving doctor gets stuck in a small Idaho town when her car loses it’s battle with a cow.
This Is Going to Hurt : Following Jesus in a Divided America (Trade Paperback – nonfiction) – The author looks at 6 hot-button issues including Covid and abortion and how Christians have developed an us vs them mindset about the issues of today.

Books for Older Kids/Teens/Young Adults


Illinois, Indiana & Ohio: 50 Hikes with Kids – Hikes and nature scavenger hunts you can do with kids in the Midwest.
The Darkness Within Us – A companion novel to the fantastic The Shadows Between Us. Chrysantha’s schemes are starting to pay off when someone tries to steal her inheritance. She can’t have that now, can she? I cannot wait to read this!!
Hearts Overboard – After a very public and humiliating breakup, Savannah tries to change her reputation – and her nemesis says he’ll help. This looks cute!
Heir, Apparently – Sequel to The Prince & the Apocalypse. Wren and her accidental prince-husband and his family and retainers are stranded on a tropical island after a plane crash. I am hoping to read book 1 this summer so I can catch up on this fun-sounding series.
The Umbrella Academy: Young Blood – A prequel book to the Netflix series. When things at home get stressful, Klaus suggests his siblings kick back at a party like normal teens.
The Enneagram for Teens – A book about the Enneagram targeted to teens.

Books for Adults


The Blind Devotion of Imogene (ebook) – Book 1 in a new series. Imogene Taylor is an elderly parolee trying to help her neighbor’s daughter deal with a dead body. This is a quirky sounding story – I can’t wait to check it out!
It’s Elementary (Trade Paperback) – An overwhelmed mom gets coerced into heading up a new diversity and inclusion committee for her daughter’s school. But her increased involvement at the school means she sees the PTA president acting strangely at the same time the principal who ticked the woman off goes missing. This is going to be fantastic!
The Next Best Fling (Trade Paperback) – First in a new Librarians in Love series. She’s in love with his brother who is engaged to someone else – and he’s in love with the fiancée. So they agree to pretend to be a couple and keep their true feelings to themselves. Until new feelings start to develop – for one another.
The Sky on Fire (Hardcover) – A new fantasy novel taking place in a world with dragons!
Sounds Like a Plan (Trade Paperback) – Rival PIs team up when they are set up to take the fall for murder.
Spellshop (Hardcover) – A new book by Sarah Beth Durst. A magic library’s librarian flees to her cozy home town after her library is destroyed – and she starts to build a new life. This sounds precisely like my kind of cozy fantasy novel!
Until Next Summer (Trade Paperback) – A new summer novel from Ali Brady. When she hears the camp where she works will be sold, Jessie decides to have one last hurrah – an adults-only camp where former campers are invited to return. Sounds like another great summer vacation read!

Jessica Jones is reluctantly pulled into a new case when a mother comes to her for help after her twins return from visiting their father with significant personality changes.
Dog Day Afternoon (Hardcover) – Book 29 in the Andy Carpenter series. Andy helps a young man Marcus has been mentoring who got a dog from the Tara Foundation. I’m super excited to read this one!
Just Playing House (Trade Paperback) – Marley reconnects with the prom date who ghosted her after they slept together when he hires her to be his stylist for a huge new movie. And he’s determined to work with her, even volunteering to stay with her and help her as she recovers from a double mastectomy.
The Love of My Afterlife (Trade Paperback) – Delphie meets the man of her dreams in the afterlife right before he is sent back to Earth. She’s given the impossible second chance of returning to Earth to find him.
The Summer of Yes (Trade Paperback) – A young writer who second-guesses her talents meets the queen of New York businesswomen in a hospital where they both decide to work together to address their regrets. This sounds like a great vacation read!
The Undermining of Twyla and Frank (Trade Paperback) – Book 2 in the Hart and Mercy series. Twyla and Frank are best friends who are spending mid-life serving with the Tanrian Marshalls. They stumble across a mystery with a dead body – and a baby dragon.

A Daughter of Fair Verona (Hardcover) – First in a new series described as “Knives Out meets Bridgerton.” The oldest of Romeo and Juliet’s children (yes, that Romeo and Juliet) is uninterested in marriage, so she tends to find new wives for all of her suitors. Except the latest isn’t someone she can redirect – he’s already buried three wives, under mysterious circumstances. When he is then found dead, Rosie goes looking for his killer. YES, PLEASE!
Finding Mr. Write (Trade Paperback) – Daphne posed as a male author when she started pitching her latest book and now there’s a bidding war, and she needs to make her fake persona real. YES, PLEASE!
A Novel Love Story (Trade Paperback) – Something new from Ashley Poston. Eileen needs her book club retreat this year more than ever, but on the way her car breaks down in a town that seems plucked entirely out of her favorite book series. YES, PLEASE! (How many times is too many times to say that in one release week?)

Tangled Up in You (Trade Paperback) – Part of the Meant to Be series of re-imagined fairy tales. This one is a take on Tangled where a sheltered young woman tries to navigate the “real world” of college and meets a player trying to reinvent himself. And it’s by Christina Lauren?! YES, PLEASE!
Under Your Spell (Trade Paperback) – A woman down on her luck ends up working with the hottest rock star in the world for the summer.
You’ll Never Find Me (Mass Market Paperback) – First in a new Angelheart Investigations series (after the novella “Into the Fire”). A PI estranged from her family – and the family investigation business – finds herself in over her head and reaching out to the family she thought she left behind. I picked up the novella to give this series a try!
You’ve Got Male (Trade Paperback) – An overwhelmed single mom goes viral when her best friend posts a clip of her describing her perfect mate. So when men start descending to make their case for being just what she’s looking for, she convinces her neighbor to be her fake boyfriend to make them go away. Yep, that’s on the list for this week, too!

All Roads Lead to Rome – Story agrees to fake date a Scottish heartthrob while he’s in Rome.
Poison in Their Hearts – The final book in the fantastic Castles in their Bones series. I will have to wait to read this until I can get a copy from the UK because I refuse to have my book cover styles not match. (First world problems!) And since I never got to do my book 2 re-read and tab, I will definitely be doing a series re-read before picking up this conclusion.

Books for Adults


The Lonely Hearts Trivia Night (Hardcover) – Five strangers join a trivia team, the Red Hot Quizzy Peppers, where they start to become friends.
The Memo (Trade Paperback) – A young woman gets the chance to relive her life and make different choices. The set up for this sounds quirky and clever!
One-Star Romance (Trade Paperback) – The maid-of-honor discovers the best man is the same person who gave her new novel a very public one-star rating.
A Very Unshakespeare Romance (Trade Paperback) – A police officer pretends to be a single dad when his cousin goes on the run and leaves him with the kids.

And when a mystery strikes the bakeoff alongside a huge storm, she might have her chance at a big story. This looks great!
Jupiter Nettle and the Seven Schools of Magic (Graphic Novel) – When Jupiter fails to get accepted into any of the Seven Schools of Magic, she gets a special invitation to attend anyway, but finds it harder than she expected. While doubting her abilities to make it at the Seven Schools, someone tries to attack them and Jupiter has a chance to show her stuff. This sounds great, too!
The Tenth Mistake of Hank Hooperman (Older Middle Grade) – When his mom goes missing for longer than usual, Hank has to reach out to the stranger listed as their emergency contact – for his sake and for his little sister’s. But asking for help, while the right thing to do, has unexpected consequences. I enjoy stories like this, so this one is on my list for June.
You Are Not Alone: A Kid’s Guide to Overcoming Anxious Thoughts and Believing What’s True – An edition of Get Out of Your Head for kids.
Icon and Inferno – Book 2 in the Stars and Smoke series for teens. A global pop star and a young secret agent team up again for a new mission. I have book 1 on my TBR, so I need to catch up on this series, soon!
The Shadows Between Us – If you haven’t already read The Shadows Between Us (it’s AMAZING), now’s the time to pick it up with these gorgeous sprayed edges. And then you will be ready when the companion book, The Darkness Within Us, releases in July.
The Wilderness of Girls – When Rhi is placed in foster care and starts working at a wilderness preserve, she discovers four feral girls who say they are lost princesses from another land. Could that be true, or are the victims of something much darker? Fascinating!

 

Books for Adults


Bigtime Series, Vol 2 (e-book) – Collects books 3-5 of the Bigtime series by Jennifer Estep into one volume.
Books and Broadswords (e-book) – Collects “Books and Broadswords” as well as “Rocks and Rapiers,” two fantasy stories by Jessie Mihalik, previously available online. I adored both, so of course I have already pre-ordered this collection.
Curvy Girl Summer (Trade Paperback) – Tired of her family’s insinuations that her big personality and/or her body are what is keeping her from finding a man, Aaliyah creates a fake boyfriend who loves her curves. Now, she just has to find such a man before a big family gathering where they are going to want to meet this “boyfriend.” Yes, please!
Natural Born Outlaws (e-book) – First in a new series by my friend Gini Koch, writing as A. E. Stanton. After watching her husband gunned down by people they thought were their friends, outlaw Belle Stark and her friends are looking for paybacks. I’m looking forward to picking this one up!
Not in Love (Hardcover) – A biotech engineer starts a steamy, secret relationship with the man trying to buy out her employer.
Rogue Sequence (Hardcover) – An incarcerated super soldier is given a chance at freedom if he will help the powers that be capture one of his former team members.
The Rom-commers (Hardcover) – An amateur screenwriter gets the chance to work on a romcom with her screenwriting idol, except he turns out to be a jerk who doesn’t believe in love and is only writing the script (which is horrible) as a means to an end. My husband and I have both enjoyed Katherine Center’s last couple books, and I’m looking forward to reading this one!
The Stars Too Fondly (Trade Paperback, LGBTQ+) – Four young adults exploring a space ship tied to the missing crew of the Providence find themselves on a space adventure.

Storm: Dawn of a Goddess – An origin story from Tiffany D. Jackson.
Wish You Weren’t Here (LGBTQ+) – Lifelong rivals find themselves in a cabin together at summer camp.

Books for Adults


Birding with Benefits (Trade Paperback) – An almost-empty nester agrees to pose as the girlfriend for a birder who needs a partner for a birdwatching contest. I love the uniqueness of the context for this story!
Cole and Laila Are Just Friends (Trade Paperback) – The latest from Bethany Turner. Best friends toy with the idea of becoming something more when they spend a week in New York while he decides if he’s going to leave their small town after a life-changing betrayal and she wonders if she wants to live across the country from her best friend.
Dead Tired (Hardcover) – Book 2 in the Expectant Detectives series. Alice and her mom-friends participate in an eco-protest as an effort to get some rest from their infants, but in the morning one of the other protesters is dead. I’m looking forward to digging into this one!
Isabel and the Rogue (Trade Paperback) – Book 2 in the Luna Sisters series. Two covert agents wonder if love is even possible for them when their work puts them at odds.
Lady Eve’s Last Con (Trade Paperback, LGBTQ+) – A small-time con woman meets her match when her plans to take down the man who broke her sister’s heart catch the attention of the man’s irresistible sister.
Leather & Lark (Trade Paperback) – Book 2 in the Ruinous Love Trilogy. A contract killer and an indie singer/songwriter team up in a fake marriage so he can track a killer for her and she can secure him freedom for a life he hates.
Love Signals (June 6, e-book) – A woman trying to beat her rotten ex on a work project gets pulled off the project to mentor some Hollywood A-lister for a new role.

Braided – Book 4 in the Sisters Ever After series. Cinna is so happy to have her sister Rapunzel home after she was kidnapped, but Rapunzel is not what Cinna expected – and danger still lurks. This sounds great! You can read my review of book one in the series here. I can’t believe I missed the rest of this series. The set up is super clever, and I love “fractured fairy tales.”
Flawless Girls
– Two sisters are sent to a finishing school. One comes home after a day, but the other stays and comes home acting like a completely different person. And then she disappears.
Twelfth Knight – Vi starts to fall for the jock who makes her crazy when they become friends in an online game. The only problem is that she’s pretending to be someone else in the game. This sounds fantastic!

Books for Adults


Dreadful (Trade Paperback) – An evil dark lord loses his memory and has to play along with the role while he waits to get his memory back.
The Fireborne Blade (Hardcover) – A female knight goes on a quest to take the Fireborne Blade from its dragon keeper. Look at that cover!!
Summer Fridays (Trade Paperback) – Two people build an online and offline relationship as they spend time together while trying to determine if their significant others are cheating on them.
