BOOK NEWS: May 22, 2018

It’s a small week for book releases, but a great week for books if you are excited about the new Star Wars movie, Solo, releasing this Friday. Here are some of the books releasing this week.

Books for Kids

Super Saurus and the Egg – Arnold, the superhero dinosaur, is ready for anything when his parents bring home an egg. Sounds like a cute get-ready-to-be-a-big-brother story.
Solo: Meet the Crew – This Early Reader tells kids all about the characters in the new Star Wars movie.

Books for Older Kids/Teens/Young Adults

Star Wars: The Mighty Chewbacca and the Forest of Fear – This comes from the author of the fantastic Origami Yoda series, Tom Angleberger. Chewy, a bounty hunter, and a spy droid are on the run through a forest that emits a mist that makes everyone experience their fears. Sounds like an adventurous story!
Star Wars: Solo: The Official Guide – The visual guide to the new movie
Where Is the Bermuda Triangle?
Where Is Walt Disney World?
The Academy – Teen fashion blogger gets sent to military school. This looks terrific!
Aftermath – The sibling of a school shooter and her former best friend who lost a brother in the event try to find their way through the aftermath of the tragedy. The full description of this has a terrific mysterious tone to it. This will be a must read for me.
Furyborn – First in a new trilogy. A prophesied queen and a bounty hunter, born centuries apart, hold keys to the future of an empire. Look at that cover! It’s gorgeous! I have been waiting for this book since the first moment I saw that cover. This is at the top of my list for the week.
Star Wars: Most Wanted – A prequel adventure for the main characters of Solo.
The Strange Fascinations of Noah Hypnotik – After a boy is hypnotized, he notices things he never saw before and there are changes in the people around him. The full description of this is bizarre and mysterious. I’d read this one just to figure out what is going on in the summary.

Books for Kids

Mustache Baby Meets His Match (BdBk) – This is a board book version of the second Mustache Baby picture book. I ADORE the two picture books in this series, but I bet they are even more fun to read in board book form where your kiddos (or grandkiddos) can carry them around with them. If you aren’t familiar with this series, I highly recommend you check them out!
Today I’ll Be a Unicorn (BdBk) – The stars of the graphic novel series Phoebe and her Unicorn get their own board book about the joys of being a unicorn. Fun introduction to the characters for the youngest readers.

MVP: Most Valuable Puppy – An adorable puppy book by ESPN personality Mike Greenberg and his wife Stacy. All proceeds go to help fight pediatric cancer! A great book for a great cause.
Splat and the New Baby – Splat the Cat is so excited to be a big brother, but when his mom brings home a baby crocodile, Splat gets a different experience than he was expecting. I have loved Splat the Cat from his very first book. The illustrations are fantastic! Looking forward to reading this one.

Blink and You Die – Book 6 in the Ruby Redfort mystery series by Lauren Child, the author of Clarice Bean and the Charlie and Lola series. Looks like this will be the last book in the series. I read the first one and enjoyed it. I’d love to catch up on this one.
Crimson Ash (May 10) – A girl is kidnapped, her memories are erased, and she is turned into a soldier. When her sister eventually finds her and her memory is restored, can she live with the things she has done?

Out of Left Field – Even though she is the best pitcher in the neighborhood, a girl in 1957 is denied the opportunity to play Little League because she is a girl. This sounds fantastic! Looking forward to reading this one.
Positively Izzy – A companion book to Invisible Emmie. This graphic novel focuses on two girls, one a dreamer and the other a “brain,” whose worlds collide at the school talent show. I’m looking forward to this one!
The Rose Legacy – In a world where horses have been killed off for carrying a deadly plague, a girl finds a secret farm of them and discovers she has an affinity for understanding their thoughts and feelings. When I was teaching, I could have started a book club with the number of kids who would have clamored for this title. Sure to be a hit.
Shining Night – Lena in the Spotlight book 3, from FaithGirlz. The latest story in the faith-based series focuses on Lena’s attempt to help a friend by putting on a huge fundraising event and the things she learns about herself and about God along the way.

If You Don’t Have Anything Nice to Say – A careless online comment blows up in a teen’s face and takes her future with it. Sounds like a timely story!
The Lies They Tell – The daughter of a man suspected of starting a fire that killed 4 out of 5 members of a family gets drawn into a group of teen boys which includes the last surviving member of that family. Getting close to them might just get her close to the truth of what really happened. Yes, please!
Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey – Graphic Novel collecting the first 5 comics in this line. My only contact with the Jean Grey character is through the XMen movies, but I have always been curious about the Phoenix aspect of her character. I’d love to check this book out.
Royals – When her perfect older sister falls in love with the Crown Prince of Scotland, Daisy must give up her quiet life and go learn how to fit in with the royals. But the Crown Prince’s younger brother is ALWAYS looking for trouble, and he might just take Daisy along for the fun. This sounds like the fabulous Prince in Disguise without the reality TV angle. I’m looking forward to reading this one!
Star Wars Lost Stars Vol 1 (Manga) – The story of two friends who find themselves on opposite sides of the Empire/Rebellion battle in Star Wars now appears in a manga format. I enjoyed the novel, and I’m curious to see what they do with the story in this format.

The Otter of Death – Book 5 in the Gunn Zoo series. This time, an otter is seen holding a cell phone which is tied to a murder. This is a series that has been on my reading wishlist since it first started. I might just have to jump into the middle with this book though. Sounds great.
The Theory of Happily Ever After – After being dumped by her fiancé and sliding into a funk, Maggie’s friends book her to speak about happiness on a cruise. When a fellow passenger asserts that smart women can never be happy, Maggie decides to set aside her recent disappointments and prove him wrong. This is a must-read for me – sounds terrific!
Amateur Hour: Motherhood in Essays and Swear Words – This sounds funny and apropos.
Fabulous Figures – An art and drawing book focusing on drawing people. When I get in creative moods, books like this call to me.

It’s the final release week of April 2018. This year is flying by already! Here are some of the books releasing this week that are on my reading list:

Books for Kids

Back to the Future – The classic movie is now a picture book. Great for kids or for adult fans.

Edward – Book 49 in the Puppy Place series
Peachy and Keen: Spirit Week Showdown – Book 2 in the Peachy and Keen series. This time, the friends are at odds over which kind of vlog will get the most views for spirit week – a prank channel or posts about the daily spirit events. This series for kids ready to try chapter books looks great.
Remy Sneakers and the Lost Treasure – Book 2 in this transitional chapter book series sends Remy and his crew on the hunt for the person who stole the Raccoon Family memory book.  The cover illustrations for this series really grab my attention; I’d love to see the books in person.

The Reckless Rescue – Book 2 in the Explorers series which is about a couple of kids who stumble onto a secret international explorer’s society. I have book one on my TBR shelves.
Star Wars Forces of Destiny – Graphic novel celebrating the women of Star Wars.

Waste of Space – Book 3 in the Moon Base Alpha mystery series that takes place on the moon. I am stunned that my library doesn’t have any of these in their ebook system already, but I will be rectifying that soon!
Ash Princess – As a child, Theo’s mother was killed and her kingdom was overthrown. Now as a teenager, Theo is tired of being a captive, hoping only to survive. She’s ready to fight back any way she can. I’ll be reviewing this one later this week.
Dead Weight: Murder at Camp Bloom – A murder mystery at weight loss camp. Graphic Novel. Sign me up for this one; I love mysteries!
The Fandom  – In a freak accident at Comic Con, a girl and her friends are transported into their favorite fandom. In the first few minutes, they accidentally kill off the heroine and are left to rescue their favorite story. I can’t wait to read this!
A Prom to Remember – The story of seven kids and a prom to remember. This strikes me as an older, more mature version of Best. Night. Ever. This one is definitely on my reading list.
Stay Sweet – When the founder of a WWII ice cream stand that has employed only girls since 1944 passes away, the staff aren’t sure what the future holds for their beloved Meade Creamery. This is on my list, too.
Trouble Never Sleeps – Book 3 after Trouble is a Friend of Mine and Trouble Makes a Comeback. This is the final book in the series, and this time Digby and Zoe are digging into the mysterious disappearance of Digby’s sister. This is a must read.

BOOK NEWS: April 17, 2018

Some fun books are releasing this week. Let’s take a look:

Books for Kids

Right Now – A picture book about living in the moment and loving who you are. I’m looking forward to seeing this one in person to get the whole story.
Baeoh and the Bully – Book 2 in the Team Taekwondo series, this book looks at bullying. I met the illustrator for this series at a con recently, and I really enjoy his work. As a TKD family, I love the idea of this series.
Star Wars Han and Chewie (Choose Your Destiny) – What a terrific idea! Star Wars stories and choose-your-own-adventure format!

Books for Older Kids/Teens/Young Adults

Council of Mirrors AND The Inside Story – Books 8 (Inside Story) and 9 (Council of Mirrors) in the revised 10th Anniversary release of this great fairy tale series. I adore the new covers! I recently treated myself to book one so I can see how the series has been updated for the anniversary celebration. Looking forward to reading it soon.
Ghost Boys – When a police officer shoots and kills a 12-year-old, the boy’s ghost observes the fall out from the tragedy. This has been a big topic, both in the news and in recent fiction, although I have generally seen it more in YA books than middle grade. I have already requested this one from the library.
Sharks: Nature’s Perfect Hunters – The next installment of Science Comics focuses on a hugely popular topic for kids – sharks.
Wedgie and Gizmo Vs. the Toof – Book 2 in the fabulous Wedgie and Gizmo series. I adored book one, and book 2 is just as funny. I’ll be posting a full review of both at the end of May, but for now I will say that I highly recommend both books for kids looking for a funny story.
Every Shiny Thing – Two girls used to caring for their families find friendship with one another, but a Robin Hood-type plan by one looking to help families with autistic kids could expose the other girl in ways she can’t imagine. This sounds fantastic. It’s described as “middle grade” in some places and “teen” in others, so this might span from upper elementary/middle school to high school.
Suitors and Sabotage – Historical fiction from the author of Duels & Deceptions (which I loved!). Imogene has found a suitor her father approves of, but it’s actually his younger brother who really catches her heart. But when several “accidents” indicate that someone is out to hurt him, their unexpected affection could cause more trouble than just in the London social scene. I loved Duels & Deceptions so much, this is absolutely on my list for this week!
Your Robot Dog Will Die – In a future where dogs stopped wagging their tails and were thus euthanized and replaced by mechanical dogs, a girl finds a real puppy that wags its tail. She has lost so much recently, that she is not about to let the puppy be taken from her. It’s an odd dystopian set up – dogs almost extinct because they stopped wagging their tails – but it is so curious that I’m going to have to read the whole book to find out how it all comes together.

Books for Adults

The Fallen – The latest in Baldacci’s Memory Man/Amos Decker series (book 4) focuses on a set of bizarre murders. If you enjoy suspenseful stories, you should be reading Baldacci.
Star Wars Last Shot: A Han and Lando Novel – In the past, Lando and Han both tried to secure a mysterious device from Fyzen Gor, without much luck. Now that Han and Leia are married, he hasn’t given Gor a thought in ages, but when Lando shows up on Han’s doorstep, running from Gor’s assassins, he’s drawn back into the hunt for this tech that could turn the galaxy upside down. I’m curious about this one. I love the Star Wars characters, of course, and I love the idea of a new, original story. This is on my list of books to look for at the library.
Practicing the King’s Economy: Honoring Jesus in How We Work, Earn, Spend, Save and Give – A book on “economic discipleship.” I love the whole idea of this!
Winning the Worry Battle – A study on worry and the life of faith based on the book of Joshua in the Bible. Sounds like a great study!

BOOK NEWS: April 3, 2018

Happy Easter Monday! Hope you had a wonderful celebration with family and friends this weekend. Maybe you or someone you love even found a book or two in the Easter basket.

Here are some of the new books coming this week that I am excited about:

Books for Kids

Ada Twist’s Big Project Book for Stellar Scientists – For fans of Ada Twist, Scientist comes this book of STEM projects just for kids. This could be a great classroom resource, too.
Alien Alert – Book 3 in the Breaking News series. This time, the bears are abducted by aliens. I haven’t read any of these, but they sound fantastic. I have this one on my list of books to check out in person.
But the Bear Came Back – A boy pushes away a persistent bear, but when the bear stops coming back, the boy misses him. I’ve seen only a few pages of this one, but it looks absolutely adorable. I can’t wait to read the whole thing.
A Dog with Nice Ears – The latest book starring Charlie and Lola.
Don’t Blink – A bedtime book in disguise. Every time the reader blinks, he or she has to turn the page. If you never get to the end, you never have to go to bed. So don’t blink. Adorable!
An Extraordinary Teacher – The Bible story of Priscilla from the Book of Acts. Part of the Called and Courageous Girls series, this looks fantastic!
The Magician’s Secret – A boy is fascinated by his grandfather’s treasures and the stories that go with them. Looks fun!
Shark Nate-o – A shark-loving boy learns to swim. Adorable! Looks like this includes some shark facts, too.
Unicorn and Horse – Horse can’t stand the unicorn he shares a pen with. But when Unicorn is in trouble, will Horse help? This is at the top of my picture book list for this week because I want to see what happens!
What’s Cooking Moo Moo? – A cow and a duck open a five star restaurant. I haven’t read the other book in this series, but I am curious to check them both out.

Books for Older Kids/Teens/Young Adults

The Doughnut Fix – A boy trying to adjust to a new town decides to open a doughnut stand and make the town’s secret doughnut recipe once again. I am fascinated by this whole story idea. I’ll be looking for this one!
Following Baxter – Two kids and a magical dog search for a missing neighbor. This sounds terrific! My kind of fantasy story.
Johnny Quick – Book 2 in the Flash TV show series for kids. I enjoyed the first book which fits into the TV version of The Flash, but takes place in a different timeline so the books can work independently from the show. This continues the story started in book one, Hocus Pocus.
Maggie and Abby’s Neverending Pillow Fort – Two girls trying to negotiate changes in their friendship after a summer apart build a pillow fort that magically connects to a network of forts around the world. The quirky premise of this story really grabs my attention. I’m curious to see how the story comes together.
My Life as a Youtuber – Book 7 in the My Life series. I included this book in the mix this week because YouTube is HUGE with kids and teens right now. This feels like a timely story of a kid negotiating the world of YouTube in the midst of his regular life ups and downs.
The Pompeii Disaster – Book 3 in Dan Gutman’s Flashback Four series about a set of kids traveling through time to document major world events. I haven’tried this adventure series, but my students and I enjoyed one of Gutman’s previous action packed series – The Genius Files.
Rebound – A new novel in verse from Kwame Alexander, Rebound takes readers into the story of Chuck Bell, father to Josh and Jordan Bell from Alexander’s epically popular book, The Crossover.
Seeker of the Crown – Book 2 in the Prisoner of Ice and Snow series about twin sisters, wrongful imprisonment and missing royals. Book one is at the top of my personal list for this week.
Until Tomorrow Mr. Marsworth – Historical fiction about the Vietnam war and a girl who desperately hopes her brother won’t enlist and a reclusive neighbor who wants to help her. The cover for this one has grabbed my attention since I first saw it.
Living Your Faith: A Journey Through James – A Bible study on the book of James for tween girls (ages 8-12)
Who is Aretha Franklin?
Who Is the Dalai Lama?
Folded Notes from High School – Set in 1991, a senior Queen Bee is dazzled by a freshman’s Danny Zuko audition which turns into obsession. I am curious to see what the tone of this one is. If it is funny, I think this could be a book I will really enjoy.
Loser’s Bracket – A difficult family situation leaves a teenager in foster care on the hunt for her missing nephew who also needs a safe place to land. This sounds like a book I will enjoy. This is on my list for this week, too.
The Oracle Queen (e-novella) – A Three Dark Crowns novella about the last Oracle Queen in Fennbirn – before they started killing any potential queens born with the oracle gift. Is the story passed down about Queen Elsabet what truly happened, or is there more to her story than anyone knows? This is available as a stand alone story for e-readers. I really enjoyed the first novella, and will definitely be reading the second one! I’ve already requested it from the library.
Queens of Fennbirn – This physical book collects both the new novella, The Oracle Queen, as well as the first one, The Young Queens, about the three queens of Three Dark Crowns when they were children.
Starry Eyes – A pair of exes with unresolved issues (and parents who are modern day Capulets and Montagues) are stranded alone together in the woods. This first caught my attention because the cover reminded me of Alex, Approximately. Sure enough, the books are by the same author. That will get me to give this one a try!
Zombie Abbey – A zombified version of Downton Abbey. I don’t read (or watch) zombie things as a rule, but I adore mashups like this, and I have enjoyed some of the author’s other books, so I include this one for those of you who might love a good zombie story. Enjoy!

Books for Adults

Avengers Infinity War Prelude – A graphic novel that sets up the new Avengers movie that releases at the end of the month. If you have seen all of the previous Marvel movies, you probably don’t NEED to read this, but if you love the characters and the stories you may WANT it to whet your appetite.
Cinco de Murder – Book 3 in the Taste of Texas mystery series starring a waitress who is also a part-time reporter. In this book, a chili cook off turns deadly.
Fiction Can Be Murder (April 8) – First in a new Mystery Writer’s Mystery series where an author discovers a murder that fits the details of her new, unpublished novel. I have already pre-ordered this one! I am SO excited! This seems to primarily be an e-book but it looks like you can order a physical copy if you want to track one down.
Good Liar – Three women with a connection to a building that exploded a year ago in Chicago harbor secrets about what happened that day. This sounds fascinating!
Lost Books and Old Bones – Book 3 in the Scottish Bookshop mystery series about a bookseller/amateur sleuth and some antique medical books that lead to murder.
My Lady’s Choosing – A choose-your-own-adventure romance! The whole premise of this – you are a Regency-era young woman faced with a handful of possible suitors – with the choose-your-path format sounds hilarious. I already have this on hold at my library.
No One Ever Asked – Three women are connected to an affluent school that opens its doors to the public school children of a district that loses its accreditation. They each have to face the issues that arise in the transition, both personally and with regard to the school. I am curious to dig into this book and see how it all plays out.
Tart of Darkness – First in the new Chef-to-Go series by Denise Swanson about  a chef who opens a catering business and boarding house after inheriting a large house. I am eager to try out this new series.
Wedding Cake Crumble – Book 10 in the fabulous Jenn McKinlay’s Cupcake Bakery mystery series. I’ve only read book one in this series, but I enjoyed it.
Living a Life You Love: Embracing the Adventure of Being Led by the Holy Spirit – The latest from speaker  and teacher Joyce Meyer focuses on enjoying the life that you have.

BOOK NEWS: March 27, 2018

It’s the final release week of March 2018, so we have lots of great books to consider. Here are some of my favorites for the week:

Books for Kids

Max and Marla Are Having a Picnic – Two friends’ grand plans for a picnic are threatened by thieving squirrels and an argument. This looks adorable.
Truck Full of Ducks – I first heard about this one from a Scholastic spring preview, and this has been on my list ever since. One of the ducks has eaten the delivery instructions for the truck full of ducks. I can not wait to read this one!
Peanut Butter and Jelly – Narwhal and Jelly are back in their third book where Narwhal discovers the joys of peanut butter.
Absolutely Alfie and the Worst Best Sleepover – Book 3 in this early chapter book series about second grader, Alfie, who is hoping to get an invitation to the most popular sleepover of the year.
Bat and the Waiting Game – Book 2 starring Bat and his pet skunk Thor. I recently read the first book in this series, and it was a delight! I’m looking forward to reading book two.

Books for Older Kids/Teens/Young Adults

American Girl: Boston Tea Party – Part of the Real Stories from My Time series. Great for history fans!
The Everafter War (10th Anniversary) – Book 7 in the fabulous Sisters Grimm series joins the 10th anniversary set of the books. I would love to read this series again with the updated material in the anniversary books!
Good Dog – [Note to book fanatics like me: Find an elementary teacher who does Scholastic orders and get in her “class.” This is a terrific way to get a great deal on books and also to get some early releases – AND you help a teacher put books in his/her classroom!! There are several books on the list today that I was able to order in January and February and read early – like this one] Brodie the dog has died, but he feels like there is unfinished business with his boy, so he takes a chance with his soul to come back to our world. I’m not 100% on board with the theology of this one, but I loved Brodie’s devotion to his boy and what he is willing to do to protect his kid.
The Parker Inheritance – From the author of the fabulous Great Greene Heist comes this story of a forgotten letter, an old injustice and a fortune. This is at the TOP of my list for the week. This is another book I was able to get early from Scholastic, but at the time of this writing, I haven’t gotten to read it yet. But soon!
Prisoner of War – Book 1 in the GI Dogs series about  dogs serving in war zones. This particular book focuses on World War II. This would have been incredibly popular with my students when I was teaching!
Sherlock Holmes and the Disappearing Diamond – Book one in the Baker Street Academy series about a young John Watson who joins forces with Sherlock Holmes to solve a mystery. I’m excited about reading this one. I love mysteries for kids.
Sundae My Prince Will Come – Part of the WISH line of books, this one is about a girl with a passion for dance, torn between her boyfriend and the boy who might help her achieve her dream.
This Book is a Classic – Book 2 in the Cilla Lee-Jenkins series. I have book one on my TBR, so I am eager to check it out and see what it is like before I try this one. I love the idea that this is a series that shares my passion for books and for writing.
Science Comics Robots and Drones: Past, Present and Future – The newest science graphic novel. This is an excellent nonfiction series for kids.
The Continent – A teen leaves the peace of the Spire to experience the Continent, a land at war, so she can update her maps. But an accident turns her vacation into a quest for survival. I am curious to try this one.
Emergency Contact – Two teens meet and their awkward encounter turns into a digital relationship that could change everything for both of them. I’m looking forward to trying this one, too.
Frat Girl – For a scholarship opportunity, a girl pledges a fraternity on probation for sexist behavior to find out the truth about them. I’ll be reviewing this one next week!
Not If I Save You First – I have been waiting for MONTHS to post my review of this book as I got it through a Scholastic order in January. I will be posting my review this Thursday, and I hope you will come back to check it out. This book was outstanding!
The Way the Light Bends – Novel in verse about sisters through adoption and one’s quest for identity. I’m looking forward to trying this one out, too.

Books for Adults

The Bengal Identity – Book 2 in the Cat Groomer Mystery series about a boarded cat that might be a stolen show cat and it’s supposed owner who turns up dead. I’d like to give this series a try.
Death by Dumpling – First in a new Noodle Shop mystery series. I have a weakness for new mystery series. I have piles of first-in-series mysteries already on my TBR shelves, but I might have to add this one, too. The setting of a family’s Asian restaurant helps set this one apart from similar set ups.
Murder She Knit – First in the Knit and Nibble Mystery series about a craft magazine editor and a murder at her knitting club. The cover illustration really grabs my attention on this one. It’s on my list, too.
Natural Thorn Killer – First in the new Rose City mystery series about a woman trying to find herself at her family’s flower shop when murder finds her instead. Yep, this goes on the list, too.
The Queens of Innis Lear – Three sisters battle for the crown. This sounds a little like an adult version of Three Dark Crowns, which I loved. So this is definitely on my wish list for this week.
Til Death Do Us Party – Book 4 in the Liv and Di in Dixie Mystery series about an event planner in Vegas for a wedding when the Elvis-impersonator doing the wedding is found dead. This series is new to me, but this particular story sounds fun.
The Uninvited Corpse – First in the new Food Blogger Mystery series about a spring garden tour that turns deadly. Yeah, I’ll probably be checking this one out, too.
Embraced: 100 Devotions to Know God Is Holding You Close – A new devotional from author Lysa TerKeurst. I have enjoyed TerKeurst’s other work, so I am eager to take a look at this. I don’t do well with keeping up when it comes to devotionals, but for my readers who enjoy a daily devotional thought, check this one out.
Failing Up: How to Take Risks, Aim Higher and Never Stop Learning – From the actor who pioneered the role of Aaron Burr in Hamilton on Broadway comes a book that could be great for graduates this spring or for anyone else who needs some inspiration to take life to the next level.
The Read-Aloud Family: Making Meaningful and Lasting Connections with Your Kids – In our busy lives, the simple act of reading aloud with our kids can be the perfect way to make memories and life-long connections. Includes book recommendations for your read-aloud time. Don’t think this is just for families with young kids. There is great value in continuing to read aloud together even when your kids are reading for themselves.
Star Trek: The Next Generation Cats – I’ve seen only  a few screen shots of the pages of this but, but this is a must have for me! Star Trek and cats, together!

BOOK NEWS: March 20, 2018

Here are some of the books releasing this week! Nothing on my radar this week for adults.

Books for Kids

Can Somebody Please Scratch My Back? – A little elephant is having a hard time finding someone to help him scratch an itchy spot on his back. The pictures I have seen look adorable. I am looking forward to seeing this in person.
The Secrets of Ninja School – A girl heads to ninja school to discover her secret skill. I can’t wait to read this one and find out what she discovers.

Books for Older Kids/Teens/Young Adults

Princess Before Dawn – Book 7 in the Wide-Awake Princess series. I have loved this series from book one. Terrific for fairy tale – and fractured fairy tale – fans!
Stuck in the Stone Age – Book one in the new Story Pirates Present series about a janitor and a scientist who team up when a lab accident sends them back in time. This looks fun! And it’s also a book about creative writing, which is a terrific bonus.
The Train of Lost Things – New from the author of the Princess Juniper series comes this story of a boy searching for a lost jacket that connects him to his dying father. This sounds like a beautiful, and tearful story.
Unicorn of Many Hats – Book 7 in the fabulous Phoebe and her Unicorn series. I will be reviewing this one here tomorrow, so come back and check out my review.
Worlds Apart – The 5th and final book in the Story Thieves series. Now that the series is wrapping up, I guess I can get all the books at once and binge read them until I am done. I can’t wait to dig into this series!
Dog Days of Summer – Volume 2 in the X-Files Origins graphic novel series for teens. These are the stories of young Mulder and Scully, before they were FBI agents, but when they were already searching for the truth.
Tyler Johnson Was Here – Marvin follows his twin brother, Tyler to a party. A shooting and police raid later, Tyler is missing. And then he is dead. And Marvin is left to sort out the pieces. This sounds like a perfect complement to The Hate U Give and Long Way Down and Dear Martin.

BOOK NEWS: March 13, 2018

If you are in the market for a new book or two, here are some of the new releases on my radar this week!

Books for Kids

Can I Be Your Dog? – A dog living in a box in an alley sends a persuasive letter to every home on Butternut Street asking if he can be their dog. I met the author/illustrator at a conference a couple years ago, and I really enjoy his work. This sounds delightful. I will have to read this one!
Curiosity: The Story of a Mars Rover – A nonfiction picture book about the Mars Rover, Curiosity. The illustrations for this look amazing. I can’t wait to see this one in person.
If the S in Moose Comes Loose – When two letters of MOOSE disappear, so does Moose. His best friend Cow tries to save the day. This sounds like just the right kind of quirky for me! This is another one I can’t want to check out in person.
Joan Procter, Dragon Doctor: The Woman Who Loved Reptiles – Picture book biography of Joan Procter. I’m not a fan of reptiles myself, but this sounds like an awesome picture book biography – something I would have added to the school library when I was teaching.
Sheep 101 – When a boy tries to count sheep to go to sleep, Sheep 101 gets stuck in the fence. How will the boy get to sleep now? I can’t wait to read this one and find out what happens to Sheep 101!
The Two Mutch Sisters – A story of sisters and an opportunity to appreciate differences. The title of this caught my eye, and I’d love to read it to get the whole scoop.
Not-So-Lucky Lefty – I love this line of early readers starring Judy Moody and her friends. The chapters are short, the print is large and the pictures are in full color. In this particular story, Stick and Mr. Moody are celebrating Left Handers Day and Judy is feeling left out. Sounds adorable.
Pet + Cat The Camp Problem – An early reader starring Peg and Cat. I love this series with an emphasis on math. This particular book focuses on counting by fives and tens and on patterns.
Stink: Hamlet and Cheese – This is book 11 in the Stink Moody series of early chapter books. I’ll be reviewing this one tomorrow, so you’ll have to come back and see what the book is all about.
I’m Not Your Sweet Babboo! – A Peanuts comics collection
Monsters Beware! – The third and final book in the Chronicles of Claudette graphic novel series. I met the author/illustrator for this series several years ago at a conference and really liked him. I loved the first two books, so this is at the top of my wish list for the week.

Books for Older Kids/Teens/Young Adults

Frank Einstein and the Space-Time Zipper – Book 6 in this fun science-fiction series by Jon Scieszka. This will be the final book in the series. My son loved these when he was younger. Great for the science-minded kids in your life.
Lights, Music, Code – Book 3 in the Girls Who Code series. This time the coding girls get to code the lights and music for the big dance, but one of them is distracted by an old friend.
Like Vanessa – Set in 1983, the main character wants to be just like the first black Miss America, Vanessa Williams. I think this book is going to be fantastic. I’m looking forward to trying this one out.
Olga: We’re Out of Here – Book 2 in this series that is set up like Wimpy Kid or Dork Diaries starring an animal lover and kid scientist, Olga. I love that the format will feel familiar to kids who like other illustrated novels like this, while the content has a science spin.
Time Bomb – The one book for teens on my radar this week comes from the author of The Testing, Dividing Eden, and Need. This one is about seven kids trapped in a school after a bomb goes off. I have already requested this one from my local library.

Books for Adults

Death al Fresco – Book 3 in the Sally Solari mystery series about a woman helping run her family’s Italian restaurant.
Lethal in Old Lace – Book 5 in the Consignment Shop series.
Playing with Bonbon Fire – Book 2 in the Southern Chocolate Shop Mystery series. I have book 1 in this chocoholic series on my wish list. Yum!
The Creativity Project – A collection of story starters and prompts from many authors and illustrators as well as the stories they wrote in response to the prompts. This would be a perfect book for elementary and middle school teachers to use with their students. I am eager to see this book in person. I have been hearing about it for ages, but I don’t have a great grasp on the layout or if the intended audience is kids or teachers or who. But some of my favorite people in children’s literature are a part of this, so it is on my wish list.
The Way of Abundance: A 60-Day Journey into a Deeply Meaningful Life – Many of my friends are HUGE Ann Voskamp fans and I know they scoop up anything and everything she produces. This particular book is a collection of online essays and pieces of Voskamp’s book The Broken Way to use as a devotional.
Wild Bread: Sourdough Reinvented – Glorious bread. This book looks beautiful. Chock full of recipes and pictures of beautiful breads, this is also on my wish list for this week.
