Summary

Henley Evans is doing everything she can to get ahead at work – putting in extra hours, working toward her MBA, and developing new marketing ideas for her company’s cruise line. So when she finds out she’s up for a huge promotion, she’s thrilled.

But then she finds out her work nemesis, Graeme Crawford-Collins, is up for the job, too. Graeme has only been with the company a year. He’s abrupt in his communication, and doesn’t always respond to her requests to post material to the company’s social media, which is his job. He took credit for some of her best work. He doesn’t even work in the office! He’s remote from half a country away.

The boss’s brilliant idea is to send both of them on one of the company’s cruises. Whoever returns with the best marketing plan to improve sales will get the job. But Henley didn’t expect that spending time with Graeme face to face would be so distracting – or that he would be so sexy.

Review

This is such a fun, funny story with a unique setting, an electric couple, and a powerful ending. This is a romantic comedy which delivers on both fronts. There are several laugh-out-loud moments, and I enjoyed the chemistry between the two leads.

What really set this apart for me, though, was the setting and the post-cruise events. I loved the unique experience of the Galápagos Islands. At least, it was unique to me. I also enjoyed the way Henley connects with the conservation efforts of those who live and work there.

The post-cruise pieces, though, won me over on this. Henley gets a wake up call on the way she is living her life (all work, no life) just in time to make a stand and make some changes. And I was cheering for her and for her team all the way to the end. Overall I would give the romance three stars, the setting 4, and the ending 5.

This is a fun story with good characters in a fascinating locale with a girl-power ending to tie it all together. Be sure to check it out! (Language, LGBTQ+ secondary characters, mostly off-page sex, references to abusive/manipulative relationship)

Summary

Thanks to some unexpected twists in an otherwise ordinary day, Rosie finds herself center state on the live quiz show One Big Question.  And she’s done an amazing job. She’s down to her final lifeline – calling someone from her speed dial – on the final question. That final question is about dinosaurs. And Rosie’s boyfriend is a paleobiologist!

When she calls to ask him the “big question,” he interrupts her and breaks up with her on live television. Stunned, she still asks the dinosaur question which he answers. In one moment, she loses her boyfriend, wins £50,000, and goes viral.

The next day isn’t much better. Her social media has blown up in awful ways. Her ex feels entitled to some of her winnings. And a catty co-worker is chomping at the bit to write a newspaper article about her shame. The one bright spot is the flower arrangement on her doorstep. The unsigned card says, “I love you. I should never have let you go. I want you back.”

Thinking maybe her future can be found in her past, Rosie decides to track down all her exes and see who sent the flowers. Maybe he’s someone she wants back, too.

Review

This has a great premise, and it’s well executed. I enjoyed Rosie. The journey back to past relationships has been done before, and I love the trope. I enjoyed how it played out in this book. I didn’t expect the bulk of this to focus on only two of her past relationships (the other 3 were addressed early on) and to take place on a cruise ship. But the cruise pieces were fantastic. I enjoy cruise stories. And there’s a great balance here with the travel experience and Rosie’s re-connections with her exes. The main story stayed the main story, but there were delightful – and some aggravating – side stories that kept me engaged in the journey.

The characters really made this story for me. The gay-best friend can feel cliched, but I liked Rosie’s relationship with Eli. He was a good “wing-man” at times and a sounding board for her as she processed her past and her present. Rosie’s parents on the cruise were a hoot! I adored them.

If you enjoy stories with fun, quirky characters, be sure to check this one out. There are some great lines and some laugh-out-loud moments. And at the time of this writing, the book is available for free to Kindle Unlimited subscribers. (Language, LGBTQ+)

REVIEW: A Crime of Passion Fruit by Ellie Alexander

Summary

The cruise ship Amour of the Seas is in desperate need of a temporary pastry chef to get them through until their new hire can arrive. Carlos, back on the ship after his time in Ashland, asks Juliet to step in. The cruise offers her double pay, and Carlos arranges for her mom and the Professor to join the cruise for free. Four glorious days at sea. What could go wrong?

Being back on the ship helps Juliet gain new insights into her marriage, her cooking and her dreams for the future. It also puts her in place to discover a dead body. Even through she’s been away for awhile, Juliet’s knowledge of the ship and crew could help the captain and the Professor figure out who the dead woman is and what happened to her. While Juliet is hunting for a murderer and trying to survive a storm at sea, her friends in Ashland are trying to keep things going at Torte in the midst of a quarrelsome neighbor, a shake up with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival leadership, and major renovations at Torte. There’s never a dull moment in the latest addition to the Bakeshop mystery series.

Review

I really enjoyed this new addition to one of my favorite cozy series. While I missed the usual Torte crew, I liked the change of setting for this book. It added to the ongoing story line of Juliet and Carlos while also shaking up the food, the characters, and the location of the action. And it was all great.

I thoroughly enjoy the core characters of this series. There’s great camaraderie at Torte. And a great balance between the ongoing relationships in Ashland and the new details in each book for the mystery at hand. Good mystery in this one. With an unknown victim (“Jane Dough”), the motive and suspect portions didn’t evolve until later in the book once we knew more about the victim.

Personally, I am “Team Tommy,” and ready for Juliet and Carlos to sort out their relationship. I am looking forward to Another One Bites the Crust (winter 2017/2018) to see what happens next with the Ashland crew and see if the author will finally resolve the Carlos situation.
